Dr. Kui Ren obtained his bachelor degree in physical science in Nanjing University and his master of science degree from Peking University, China. He then move to Columbia University where he obtained his PhD degree in Applied Mathematics. He taught mathematics and computer science briefly in the University of Chicago as a Dickson Instructor before moving to UT Austin as a faculty in the Mathematics Department in Fall 2008.
Dr. Ren’s main research focus is applied and computational mathematics, with applications in imaging sciences (such as medical imaging and seismic imaging), material science (such as modeling and simulation of solar cells) and computer science (such as theory of random graphs and complex networks). His teaching responsibility in UT including both graduate and undergraduate level mathematics courses.
Besides his regular research and teaching, Dr. Ren mentors a few PhD students and several undergraduate students on their study of mathematics and related topics. His PhD students take both academic (as postdoctoral researchers for instance) and industrial (in Schulumberger, CGGveritas etc) jobs after graduation.
